On my listening tour across Trent’s campuses and the broader community, I heard a phrase that stayed with me. In conversations with students, faculty, alumni, and partners, someone described Trent this way: “We stand out by standing closer.”
Closer to one another. Closer to the questions that matter. Closer to the communities around us and the futures our students are striving for every day. That simple idea captured something essential about Trent. It became a guiding thread as we talked together and began shaping a renewed vision and mission for the University.
Our vision is both simple and powerful: Trent is the place to be and become, engage in meaningful learning, and build community. We provide the space and experiences that forge pathways to opportunity.
For Trent alumni, this idea will feel familiar. Many of you first discovered your own pathway here – through a conversation with a professor that opened new possibilities, through connections that still endure, or through moments on campus that changed the direction of your life.

This beautifully renewed Trent Magazine carries that same spirit forward. Designed to linger a little longer – on coffee tables, in shared spaces, and across digital platforms – it creates room for stories that invite reflection, conversation, and inspiration. It is an important way to share more widely the remarkable impact and influence of Trent faculty, staff, and in particular Trent alumni.
In these pages, you’ll encounter powerful stories that explore changing winters across the Great Lakes, alumni voices helping shape Canada’s public conversation, and reflections on the iconic places that connect generations of Trent students – from the Faryon Bridge to the gathering spaces where friendships, debates, and traditions are founded.
Together, they remind us that Trent has always been more than a campus. Trent is a community where ideas move between generations and where people help shape one another’s journeys, with substance and soul and space.
My hope is that this new chapter of Trent Magazine brings you a little closer to the Trent of today and the Trent of tomorrow – and that you will share these stories widely within your own communities.
Because wherever life has taken you since your time here, you remain part of a university that continues to grow, learn, and imagine what comes next in our legacy together.
